Down 28-18 at the half, Marietta 2 (0-3) came surging back to force overtime but in the end, it was South Paulding’s veteran backcourt that helped clinch the victory. 2020 6-2 SG Caleb Duncan was red-hot, scoring a game-high 21 points to carry the Spartans (1-2) to the finish line. Duncan had 10 points at the half as South Paulding held a comfortable lead, but Marietta found a spark in 2022 5-10 G Baxter Barber and 2022 6-6 F Izayiah Nelson. Baxter, a slick lefty, found creases in the defense and hit floaters in the lane while Nelson provided a lift both inside and out. He finished with 9 points, 4 rebounds and 1 steal and even knocked down a corner three. Barber had 8 points and 5 rebounds. As Marietta inched closer and closer, the play of 2022 5-10 G Cedric Roach eventually helped the Blue Devils tie it and send the game to overtime. Roach had all 6 of his points in the second half. After missing a fade away three at the buzzer in regulation, Duncan put his foot down in overtime and put a stop to Marietta’s comeback story. Duncan drained a three and on the ensuing possession collected a steal and raced down for a tough layup to give South Paulding a 46-41 lead that they would never relinquish. Up three with seconds remaining, South Paulding missed a free throw but instead of Marietta gathering the loose ball to set up a last second heave, 2020 6-6 F Knowledge Ruben back-tapped it out to Duncan to run out the clock. 2020 6-0 PG Jordan Goodrich had a strong game even though he struggled from the line late. The Spartan lead guard had 11 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals, working well with Duncan on the perimeter. 2020 5-8 PG Grant LaSalle provided big minutes in relief of Goodrich and contributed 5 points.
